| The
Los Angeles Rod & Reel Club lost one
of its most respected and treasured members
with the passing of Dan Felger on Friday,
November 19, 2010
Dan was the last of LARRC's
"charter members," having joined
the Club in its founding year, 1950. In
his 61 years of membership, Dan was the
first 2-term president (1985-86,) Foundation
Chairman, Chum Line Editor, Kid's Trip Chairman,
chartermaster for dozens of trips, served
countless terms as a member of the Board
of Directors and as a Foundation Trustee
and for many years was the Club Historian.
Dan lived life to the fullest with fishing
his primary passion. One week he would be
on the decks of a long range boat catching
giant tuna and wahoo, the next he would
be hunting down largemouth at his home on
Lake Sherwood. He always seemed to have
a rod in his hand and it usually had a fish
on the business end. If a novice angler
needed advice, Dan would be quick to offer
it. And he could dish out more than a little
"grief" to the veteran who let
a fish get away!
No aspect of fishing was too small for Dan
to care about. He was meticulous about his
tackle, deeply respectful of the resource
and anxious to get new people involved...in
fishing and the Club. Dan always had the
well being of LARRC in mind.
Dan wouldn't like anyone to know this, but
he often paid the yearly dues of members
who had fallen on hard times. He would pay
for fishing trips that he had no intention
attending, instead passing his spot along
to another member who could not afford to
go.
Dan's sporting passions went beyond fishing.
He was a devoted follower of the football
and basketball teams at the alma mater,
UCLA; a former Dodgers and Lakers season
ticket holder and an avid tennis player.
Dan's last LARRC trip was on the Pacific
Dawn in October. Fishing in flat calm weather
at San Miguel Island, he was surrounded
by his favorite fishing companions...son
Brad and a boat full of Club members, including
perhaps his best friend in LARRC, Al Scow.
Fishing was excellent for quality rock fish
and ling cod. Dan and Al always turned any
trip into a personal contest. Much to Dan's
chagrin, Al won the jackpot.
At the request of his family, tributes to
Dan can be made to the LARRC Foundation.
